Oregon Offers Much for Visitors, Including First Class Birding
Coquille, Oregon
Coquille, incorporated 125 years ago, is the county seat of Coos County, Oregon. With a population of less than 5,000, Coquille has long depended upon Oregon's coastal mountain logging operations. Situated 11 miles from Oregon's scenic Highway 101, and about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Coquille is sheltered from the brunt of winter storms, and lies in a hilly setting of Douglas fir, Sitka spruce and Myrtle trees. Several forks of the Coquille River bisect the area, and flood the low-lying agricultural fields during winter rains. These flooded fields, called "winter lakes" locally, attract a wide variety of water birds, adding significantly to the late winter bird population.
Second Street runs through downtown Coquille and to the northeast, where it becomes Shelley Lane, ending 2.5 miles uphill at an elevation nearly 500 feet above the downtown. The neighborhoods near the top of the hill are heavily treed, and provide excellent habitat for Pileated Woodpeckers, Steller's Jays, Red-breasted Nuthatches, both Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Purple Finches, Dark-eyed Juncos, Evening Grosbeaks, California Quail, Townsend's and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Allen's, Rufous and Anna's Hummingbirds, among many others. Suet, thistle, sunflower seed and hummingbird feeders are all effective in this suburban area.
Birding Sites in and Around Coquille
With a more temperate and drier climate than that of north-central Oregon, the southwest part of the state is a haven for migratory and residential bird life. The small community of Coquille lies in the heart of this territory.
The elevation within the city varies from near sea level to some 500 feet above. This, coupled with the mix of forest, riparian area and agricultural fields, provides a variety of habitat that draws a large variety of bird species, from hummingbirds to woodpeckers, and warblers to water birds.
Central Street runs west through town, and intersects with Fairview just past the Myrtle Lane Motel. Both Fairview and the next street intersecting with Central,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dollarhyde, are good areas to bird, especially in the late winter when a "winter lake" forms between the two streets. Many water birds can be found on the flooded area and along the shoreline, including Hooded Merganser, American Coot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mallard, Great Egret and Bufflehead. Birds common to the forested area beyond the water include Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawk, Hermit thrush, Song and White-crowned Sparrow, Brown Creeper and Northern Flicker.
Highway 42,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], between Coquille and Coos Bay,iveFingers Classic Smartwool Bulletin Board for Bl, offers a number of pullouts that offer excellent birding, as well. During late winter and early spring, flooded agricultural land to the south of this highway is rich with water birds. Access is available at several spots within the first three miles along the left side of the highway as it leads toward Coos Bay. An abandoned railroad track lies below the highway, and parallels the road for some distance, providing a convenient birding path. The flooded fields are an excellent place to find Ruddy Duck, Canada Geese, Northern Shoveler, Snowy and Great Egret, Bufflehead, Western Grebe and other water birds. The brush and treed shoreline harbors Red-tailed Hawk, Winter Wren, Killdeer, Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Yellow-rumped Warblers, among others.
Much less crowded than California to the south and Washington to the north, Oregon is a getaway haven for tourists. With publ
