Based on the first full-length trailer, how does this movie look? Really freakin' good! ILM's command of computer animation has never been questioned, even when the product it was associated with was somewhat questionable. The look of the film and the creatures is very close to photo-realistic but cartoony enough to be charming. Given that Verbinski has talked about using "cutting-edge animation techniques" that "will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature," that implies that ILM is using motion-capture for the film. Despite the technique's reputation in the industry (Disney's A Christmas Carol, anyone?) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's clear ILM's trying to give the much-derided process more respect and, so far, they've succeeded.
However, it's clear Rango has got its own thing going on: gotta love the quartet of mariachi birds singing on a bleached cow skull, or the dust-coated lizard who tries to save Rango from a hungry hawk. The sequence where the chameleon tries to escape the hawk's claws is well-plotted, mixing laughs and thrills in equal measure. If the rest of Rango stands up to the promise offered in this trailer [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this should be a fun time at the movies.
Unlike recent Star Wars installments, ILM's talents are in the service of a charmingly twisted vision highly reminiscent of Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which also starred Depp – the wind-up goldfish that swims across Rango's vision does push the comparison a mite.
Even more interestingly, Rango marks the first foray into CGI animation for George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic. Given that ILM controlled the mighty Pixar during the first years of its development, it's both ironic and apt that the special effects giant would follow its former subsidiary into the world of CGI animation.
Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin Star in Paramount, Nickelodeon, ILM's Rango
The movie follows the titular character, "a pet chameleon with an identity crisis, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery taking place in the western town of Dirt." In addition to Depp, the film also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Ray Winstone (Beowulf) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), and another Pirates of the Caribbean alumnus, the formidable Bill Nighy.
Rango opens March 4th, 2011.

Verbinski, Breathed team up
Movie industry professionals perked up when director Gore Verbinski announced that he was hooking up with his Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp to make an animated film called Rango. Given how much box office that series generated for Disney, it wasn't surprising that Paramount and Nickelodeon swiftly snagged a piece of the action.
