A bit of an understatement though it may have been, it was nonetheless fitting, as the band (rounded out by the towering riffs of lead guitarist Kim Thayil, the seismic rhythms of bassist Ben Shepherd, and the heart-pounding beats of drummer Matt Cameron), proceeded to bludgeon and mesmerize the head-banging crowds with all the moody energy they'd had back in the '90s, and with a setlist (found below) which featured classic track after classic track
A setlist which, while covering all the obvious tracks like the tribal Spoonman (an early-show highlight which had the crowd uniformly screaming out it's "Save me!" refrain) and the darkly psychedelic Black Hole Sun (which had audiences roaring with it's opening notes), also made sure to include gems for the die-hard fans like the hypnotic and escalating "Gun" from Louder Than Love [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the epic and deeply moving "Like Suicide" from the band's 1994 masterpiece Superunknown.
An intensity and focus which had each member visibly in their own world throughout the entire show, as one couldn't possibly stand farther apart from the other on stage and against the black backdrop adorned with the band's black and white saw-blade symbol (as found on the cover of their immensely-rocking 1991 LP, Badmotorfinger).
And while Soundgarden have yet to announce an extensive world tour (Lollapalooza was one of three dates the band has played since it's regrouping on January 1st), and while there aren't any set plans for a new album (though they band has recently announced details for a retrospective entitled Telephantasm, to be released in September), it is especially comforting to know that the legendary act itself is still a

Bio of Chris Cornell, Rock Singer
As well, it is an intensity and focus that is reassuring [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as (some would argue) Chris Cornell's output has grown increasingly lax since the band's original break-up, what with his involvement in the better-on-paper-than-in-action supergroup Audioslave, and both of his largely-panned solo albums that followed.
Has it really been twelve or so years? One wouldn't have thought so if they'd attended Soundgarden's festival-closing nostalgia-inducing performance in Grant Park on Sunday. One which culled some of the very best songs from the four-piece band's catalogue and brought them to life with all the brooding, thundering, blacker-than-black monstrousness and intensity that the act was and is known for.
In Closing
It also sure didn't seem like that long a time for lead-singer/guitarist/songwriter Chris Cornell either (who happened to be sporting the same mane of curly black hair he had back in '91), as he spoke out to the massive and enthusiastic crowds about how the band were back after a slight "break".
And while some choice-cuts, such as the serpentine and irresistibly catchy "Pretty Noose" from the band's final album, 1996's Down On The Upside [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one really couldn't argue with what was played, not to mention the workman-like intensity and focus and care with which each song was performed.
