The Australian film industry in the ‘70s and ‘80s was a wild and wooly place, strongly supported by government subsidies and seemingly unbound by safety regulations or content restrictions. Some of the stunts featured in Not Quite Hollywood are among the most dangerous and outrageous ever put to film, including a stunt man jumping 50 feet into the ocean while on fire [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a driver who had one leg in a full plaster cast while performing a stunt that required him to smash his car through a van, and at least one scene where actors were being fired upon with live ammunition.
Not Quite Hollywood was directed by Mark Hartley, and it is clearly the product of passion. The film moves along at a brisk pace, and Hartley’s background in advertising shows in the slick and creative way the film is edited together. In fact, it sometimes feels more like a commercial for Ozploitation movies than a definitive history of the genre. Like the films it celebrates, Not Quite Hollywood is far more concerned with being entertaining than anything else.

Blood, boobs and beasties
Some of the outrageous scenes excerpted from Ozploitation flicks include a naked woman tied to the front grill of a truck, a shower that pours blood [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kung-fu fighting at Ayres Rock, and an incredibly young-looking Mel Gibson facing down apocalyptic gangs of motorheads. There are scenes which simply must be seen to be believed.
Hollywood stars Jamie Lee Curtis, George Lazenby and Dennis Hopper, who were among the American actors who were brought over to Australia to star in Australian exploitation films in the late ‘70s, and they recount their stories of being set on fire, physically punching their co-stars and being asked to perform stunts that would never be attempted on an American film set.
An entertaining [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], engaging look at a forgotten era
A documentary filled with more nudity, explosions, blood and car crashes than all the Hollywood films produced in any given year, Not Quite Hollywood shines the spotlight on a forgotten corner of film history, the exploitation genre films produced during Australia’s New Wave during the ‘70s and early ‘80s, including horror movies like Razorback, about a giant warthog which terrorizes the outback, action flicks like Mad Max, and some of the most absurd sex comedies ever committed to celluloid.
Interviews with Hollywood stars and Australian legends
Quentin Tarantino, the famed director of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, is a noted fan of Ozploitation, and he offers spirited commentary on his favorite Aussie action and horror films in this fast-paced documentary. Other interview subjects include the actors, producers, directors and stuntmen who made these films what they are. Most of these filmmakers will be unknown to most viewers who aren’t Australian film fanatics, but their stories are fascinating.
