A BookletChart is available to recreational boaters in most regions of the country. The charts are provided as downloadable Adobe Acrobat files that can be printed at home. A broadband internet connection is highly recommended. Double sided printing gives the best results and individual pages are stapled together to form the ChartBooklet. The J.L Darling Corporation manufactures a “Rite in the Rain” ink-jet paper product called Weatherjet that could make a BookletChart more durable for boaters.
Try printing out a BookletChart and see how well it works. Having one of these charts onboard might be a very effective navigation option after the GPS batteries run low. While the new BookletCharts are well suited for most recreational boaters [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NOAA points out that these booklets do not meet the chart carriage requirements for vessels regulated under Titles 33 and 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Use an official full-sized NOAA chart for critical navigation tasks.

NOAA’s booklet charts will have a very familiar look and feel to any mariner that has used a traditional paper nautical chart. Compared to full-sized charts, booklet charts are reduced in scale and divided into separate pages for more convenient viewing. Distance scales used on the diminutive charts are accurate when used to estimate distances.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Coast Survey has released a trial nautical chart product aimed at recreational boaters. Labeled by the trademark of BookletChart [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this new creation is one way boaters can verify their position on the water without use of a GPS receiver.
As an added bonus for boaters, each BookletChart comes with excerpts from the Coast Pilot for the area covered by the chart. These notes are provided on a single page that includes emergency contact information. The Coast Pilot is a nautical reference that provides information relevant to boaters. Topics like location of channels, nature of local currents, prominent landmarks, navigation rules [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and descriptions of harbor are presented in the Coast Pilot.
A company called Magic Instinct Software (MIS) specializes in electronic mapping and has extensive experience working with nautical charts. Recently the company posted an application online that overlays satellite imagery from Google Earth on NOAA nautical chart. The application known as GeoGarage allows visual mixing of the satellite images and chart data to produce a coherent image.
The Office of Coast Survey intends to update the BookletCharts on a weekly basis using the Notices to Mariners system that is already familiar to many mariners. Updates will not occur during the initial experimental roll out of these new charts. Coast Survey maintains an inquiry page online were boaters can report errors they might see on the charts.
