Some Early Wind Farms Were a Danger to Wildlife

In the rush to develop alternative energy, positioning of some of the first land-based wind farms put them in the path of migratory birds. Wind turbines at the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area in California killed golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia), among other species. This site is often mentioned by those opposed to the development of further wind energy resources. Modifications to the California site and improvements in wind turbine design have reduced that impact.

The wind farm will not affect views on the Cape Cod Bay side or along the Great Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. There has even been some suggestion that the first US offshore wind energy source might draw visitors who have never seen European alternative energy companies' offshore installations.
Most importantly, there has not, to date, been any environmental impact from wind–based alternative energy that comes close to the potential amage done by offshore oil and gas platforms, pipelines or transport tanker accidents. Cape Cod's Buzzard's Bay is still affected by an oil spill that occurred 40 years ago. The conservation organizations involved all support further development of clean energy within the US as both environmentally and economically positive efforts to reduce the country’s carbon footprint.

The Conservation Law Foundation (clf.org), the Natural Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org), the Union of Concerned Scientists (ucsusa.org) and the Massachusetts Audubon Society (massudubon.org) issued a joint press release supporting the decision of Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, to approve the construction of the first offshore wind energy site in the United States which will be placed in Nantucket Sound between Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
The economy of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard is based largely on tourism and the fishing industry. While environmental impacts are expected to be minimal, the impact that the Cape Wind project will have on tourism is not clear.
