is only too bad that more people do not feel this way. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
In the course of one week [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I almost always come across at least a dozen people while I am driving who appear to be drunk or incapacitated in some way. And it isn't until I am close enough or until I pass them by that I realize that none of these things are true. Rather, the cause for their unstable driving is due to the fact that they are on their cell phones. Some people are actually talking on their cell phones, but I have found that the majority of my encounters are with people who seem to be using their cell phones to send emails, text messages or something else (yes, I do actually get close enough to see this going on!). It is both shocking and disturbing that so many are willing to risk their lives for something that can wait until they are completely stopped or until they get to wherever their final destination may be (after all [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everywhere you go has internet access!)
In many states within the United States now, cell phone use is actually banned while driving unless you have a hands-free device. However, there is now speculation over whether or not the hands-free devices really act as deterrents for vehicular accidents. I think that at the root of the problem with talking on the cell phone is the emotion and/or thought behind it. To clarify, imagine that you are on the phone with a close family member who is informing you that something tragic has happened that will require you to come home right away. What will your reaction be? How will your driving change in that instant? Similarly, what if you are on the phone with your spouse or partner and they inform you that they no longer want to be with you or something of that sort? How will it affect your coordination and/or ability to drive? What are you more focused on when you are engrossed in a conversation with someone on the phone- the road or the conversation?
Things like these make it difficult to determine whether there is any merit to hands free devices being an acceptable form of communication while driving. And if you think back to before we had cell phones (which really wasn't that long ago), how were we ever able to survive a car ride?! It may sound silly to some, but I think that we could do without cell phones entirely while driving. As for me? I've started to leave my cell phone in the trunk of my car on vibrate or silent while I am driving so that I am not even tempted. Out of sight; out of mind, right?
