Sylvester Stallone Directs Rocky II
Rocky II is essentially a reprise of the first film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only this time the underdog is allowed more than a heroic defeat at the hands of the champion. Stallone even rehashes the scene where Rocky runs through the streets of Philadelphia as loads of people follow after him. The film is high on drama and short on actual boxing sequences. Stallone piles on the sentiment with a trowel but Rocky II remains highly entertaining despite its flaws.
Rocky IIStarring Sylvester StalloneWritten by Sylvester StalloneDirected by Sylvester StalloneYear 1979Running Time 119 mins
Fittingly given its similarity to the original Rocky II emulated its success at the box-office earning over $200 million worldwide and becoming one of the biggest hits of 1979. Stallone brought Rocky back three years later for Rocky III (Stallone 1982). This second sequel focused on Rocky’s defence of his world title and his confrontation with the brutal ‘Clubber’ Lang (Mr T).
Creed Versus Balboa – The Rematch
Rating 3/5
Rocky II begins with a lengthy recap of the climax of the first film. Creed then confronts Rocky at the hospital and demands a rematch so he can show him up properly. Rocky however has decided to retire and marry Adrian (Talia Shire). Rocky settles into a new life of domesticity with Adrian in their new home, but the purse from the Creed fight quickly disappears.
Creed isn’t happy either. Not when he is getting fan mail like “You’re a fake [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fight was a fake. Go kill yourself.” Determined to get Rocky back into the ring he launches a dirty campaign to force his opponent out of retirement. It is game on but matters are complicated when Adrian becomes sick during childbirth and lapses into a coma.

“Ain’t gonna be no rematch” says Appollo Creed as the bell rings to end his punishing victory over Rocky Balboa. “Don’t want one” replies Rocky. $225 million worldwide box-office grosses and three Academy Awards later here is the inevitable rematch. Sylvester Stallone once again stars as Rocky and also replaces John G. Avildsen as director.
Much of the film is spent recreating Rocky’s underdog status. Although he is now famous he is still struggling to be taken seriously. There is a humiliating sequence where he tries to film a TV advertise dressed as a caveman. Rocky gets a job working in the meat factory with his obnoxious brother-in-law Paulie (Burt Young) but is made redundant. Then Mickey (Burgess Meredith) lets him work at the gym [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the other fighters are embarrassed by his presence.
