Mutiny and Madness
This would be story enough for an ordinary filmmaker, but Herzog is not interested in the action of the film so much as the opportunities it presents for images of striking power and originality. We see a marooned ship setting atop a ferocious tree, a man decapitated so swiftly that the severed head finishes the sentence it was speaking. And above all we see the plotting [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], subtly deranged face of Klaus Kinski, an actor so volatile that, according to legend, Herzog resorted to forcing Kinski to act while standing beside the camera, aiming a loaded rifle at Kinski's head.
The film takes, as it's starting point, Gonzalo Pizarro's doomed expedition into the South American rainforest to find the lost City of El Dorado. There are close-ups of starving faces and one long shot of the vicious river they are travelling along. The group has traveled too long and Pizarro is about ready to turn back. He informs everyone that he will send a small party of soldiers and slaves down the river to search for the city of gold. The group will be led by Don Pedro de Ursua, with Don Lope de Aguirre as his second-in-command.

A Great Vision
There are many rumors and legends about the filming of Aguirre [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and even the facts are so unbelievable that, in most instances, it's impossible to tell truth from fiction. What is clear is that Herzog went to greater lengths than could be imagined by other directors in order to secure his vision. And the result speaks for itself. Here is a film that, if you are open to the experience, will take you to a place in the mind that no film before or since has dared to approach.
From the very beginning, it is clear that there is madness within the power-hungry Aguirre, who is played by Klaus Kinski with a quiet menace that emphasizes the inferno burning inside him. Soon, Aguirre stages a mutiny in which the ineffectual Ursua is overthrown and the party sets itself up as a new empire. The fat and greedy Don Guzman is installed as their emperor. Soon, he too is dead and the party finds itself under the reign of the deluded Aguirre, who leads them further downriver as food runs out, arrows fly out of the jungle, and fever leads to hallucinations.
A long and exhausted line of slaves, soldiers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], caravans, and horses makes it way down a jagged mountain path, deeper into the savage and unpredictable Amazon jungle. These opening images of Werner Herzog's 1971 film, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, sear themselves into the memory and provide the opening portal into one of the greatest movie-going experiences.
