Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes: Decent Entertainment for the Kiddies
Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes DVD Extras
This direct-to-DVD flick is clearly aimed at the kiddies: longtime Tom and Jerry fans will notice that their favourite duo's look has been altered, probably to make it more congruent with WP's more modern style. It's not necessarily a bad thing, especially since the cat and mouse have been heavily altered since their initial debut in 1939's Puss Gets the Boot. That said, at least one of the senior animators is a massive Tex Avery fan: at least two sequences pay homage to the master. It's a nice nod to animation fans, although most viewers – and their kids – won't get it.
In turn-of-the-century London, a series of brazen jewel heists are making Scotland Yard look foolish – although with detectives like Droopy, Tuffy and Butch on the force, it ain't hard. The beautiful cabaret singer Red (Avatar: The Last Airbender's Grey DeLisle) is being framed for the crime, and she turns to Sherlock Holmes (Michael York) and Dr. Watson (John Rhys-Davies) for help. Naturally, Red's overprotective butler (aka Tom) and Holmes' rodent protegé (aka Jerry) take an instant dislike to one another. Can Holmes apprehend the real thief, and is the diabolical Professor Moriarty (Malcolm McDowell) somehow involved?
In case you were wondering, yes, Moriarty's the real crook. That's no spoiler: the flick all but hits you over the head with that piece of news within the first 5 minutes. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tom and Jerry generally do battle with a trio of malevolent cats – their design owes more to Walt Disney than Termite Terrace – who are armed with an array of sophisticated gadgets.
For the folks at Warner Premiere, that means teaming the madcap duo with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation in the direct-to-DVD animated film Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes. It's a moderately entertaining mystery story with frequent time-outs for the cat and mouse to pound the ever-loving snot out of one another.

Tom and Jerry Movie?
Less forgivable is how the animators drop in cameos from lesser-known Hanna-Barbera characters like Droopy the Dog: their presence isn't really necessary and their scenes detract from the main story.
If the producers of this direct-to-DVD film just wanted to update Tom and Jerry for the 21st Century, and create an entertaining time-waster, then it's mission accomplished. Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes is no classic, but it makes the cat and mouse duo entertaining even to non-fans and – after 70 years – that's a pretty
The big draw in this section is the 'How to Draw Tom and Jerry' featurette, which features animator Spike Branford demonstrating how he draws the cat and mouse. It's not a bad little primer, and aspiring cartoonists can fast-forward or slow the featurette down at will in order to make their versions closer to the original.
Thankfully, the tale gives some much-needed shape to Tom and Jerry's shenanigans. Given that yours truly has a limited tolerance for their schtick, this makes the inevitable mayhem surprisingly easy to digest.

For over 70 years, Tom and Jerry have been battling each other across the silver screen [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the boob tube and – on occasion – the InterWeb. After so many decades, the shopworn formula needs some shaking up.
